GeM is where a huge share of government procurement happens — and a DSC error at the wrong moment doesn’t just cost you time, it can cost you an entire bid if the submission window closes while you’re troubleshooting. The single most important thing about GeM specifically: Bid submission deadlines on GeM are hard cutoffs with no exceptions — if your DSC fails mid-submission and the window closes, there is generally no workaround to submit late, no matter how close you were. Test your DSC and signing setup well before a bid deadline, never during the final hour.
The Most Common GeM DSC Errors
- “DSC already mapped to another login ID.” A GeM-specific error — the same certificate can’t be simultaneously mapped to two different GeM user profiles. If you’re switching companies, roles, or re-registering, the old mapping needs to be cleared first, usually through GeM support.
- Token not detected by the browser. GeM typically relies on a specific browser extension (“GeM Signer”) for Chrome. If it isn’t installed, or an old version is conflicting, the token won’t register even though it’s physically plugged in.
- Wrong certificate type selected — Signature only vs Sign+Encrypt Combo. Standard GeM actions usually only need a signing certificate, but certain e-tender-style submissions with confidential financial bids require the Combo (Sign+Encrypt) certificate. Using the wrong type causes the submission to fail without always explaining why.
- Certificate expired mid-transaction. Because GeM bid windows are strict, an expiring certificate discovered at the last minute is one of the most costly DSC failures possible on this portal — there’s no grace period for the deadline itself.
- Using an old Class 2 DSC. Class 1 and Class 2 certificates are no longer accepted for GeM registration or transactions — only Class 3.
- Browser or driver conflicts. Similar to other portals — outdated token drivers, browser extension conflicts, or using an unsupported browser all cause silent signing failures.
- OTP-based signing no longer available as a fallback. GeM has been phasing out OTP-based signing as an alternative to DSC for many transaction types — meaning a working, correctly registered DSC is increasingly the only reliable path, not a backup option.
